Rules of the road questions

The following is a list of possible questions and answers for the rules of the road section of the driving test. It is by no means an exhaustive list and should not replace proper preparation for the driving test.

Q.When driving at night when should you dip your headlights?

A.Meeting oncoming traffic,when following close behind other traffic,in continuously lit areas, in falling snow, in fog or at dusk/dawn.

 

Q.When can you overtake on the left?

A.When the other traffic is turning right,when you are turning left or when in lanes of slow moving traffic and the traffic in the right hand lane are moving slower.

 

Q.How would you recognise a zebra crossing at night?

A.Flashing amber beacons.

 

Q.Where would you find a broken yellow line?

A.Hard shoulder or the edge of the carriageway.

 

Q.Where should you not park?

A.Double yellow lines, a clearway, at a bend, brow of a hill, close to a junction, where there is a continuous white line or anywhere you may cause an obstruction.

 

Q.Where should you not overtake?

A.A bend in the road,at a junction,the brow of a hill/hump back bridge,where there is a continuous white line or anywhere your view of oncoming traffic is restricted.

 

Q.What should you do if you see a red triangle on the road?

A.Prepare for a possible obstruction ahead.

 

Q.What is the two second rule?

A.You should stay two seconds behind the car in front of you. To judge this you should pick a fixed point on the road ahead and as the vehicle in front of you passes this point and recite "only a fool breaks the two second rule".You should not reach the point before you finish saying the line.

 

Q.At a junction with roads of equal importance to whom must you give way?

A.Traffic from the right and traffic already on the junction.

 

Q.What does a green light mean?

A.Proceed if it is safe to do so.

 

Q.What does an amber light mean?

A.Stop if it is safe to do so.

 

Q.Name some people in authority for whom you must stop?

A.Gardai, School Wardens or people in charge of animals.

 

Q.If you are attempting to enter a one way street at the no entry end what road markings would you see?

A.A continuous white line with a broken line behind it.

 

Q.What rules apply to a yellow junction box?

A.You can't enter unless your way ahead is clear unless you are turning right and are prevented from doing so by oncoming traffic.

 

Q.If there are two sets of lines in the centre of the road, one continuous and one broken which one would you obey?

A.The one nearest you.

 

Q.What does a broken white line in the centre of the road mean?

A.You may overtake if it is safe to do so.

 

Q. What do white horizontal lines in the centre of a road mean?

A. You treat the as you would a traffic island and don't enter them.
